8th Grade Cooperative210 Gold Flat Road Lead Instructor: Anya Jacobson
The Forest Charter 8th grade co-op is a site based program running Monday-Thursday in Nevada City. The co-op is distinguished for its integrated peace education; weaving themes of peacemaking, nonviolence, conflict resolution, global politics and activism, international collaboration, personal exploration, and communication into its standards based curriculum. This manifests in student projects as diverse as the creation of “The Bill of Rights” for the classroom, the production of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” and a student led project to rebuild and refurbish two preschools outside of Guatemala City. The aim of each project is to educate and empower the students, both as individuals and as a class. The co-op is composed of 15 students and led by education specialist Anya Jacobson. There are also several specialty teachers, as well as frequent expert guests to the classroom. The result is a rich, diverse, rigorous, and warm learning environment. The 8th grade curriculum will follow the standards established by California, enriching these through the theme of peace education. The year will culminate with a two week class trip, created as a right of passage for the students.
